Root Canal Therapy
Root canals are performed to save a tooth from being extracted. Once a tooth has been damaged or has infected roots, a basic filling will not restore the tooth. The procedure to fix the tooth is to remove its pulp chamber and pack in its place a special filling material. Sometimes a crown will be placed over the tooth to give additional strength and support for chewing.
In the past, a tooth was extracted when it had infected or damaged roots. When root canals were first being performed, they were quite painful, and patients avoided restoration of a tooth if it needed a root canal. With today’s advanced technologies and anesthesia, root canals are mostly painless.
